Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. She showed DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a young student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash belonging to one of the juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
